Asphalt and bitumen

In this section

Asphalt industry In order to improve the life performance of asphalt road systems, pavement failures such as rutting, pushing, shoving; thermal and fatigue cracking must be eliminated or minimized by design. Knowing the rheological properties, or viscoelastic behavior, of the binder are the keys to understanding and predicting pavement performance over a wide range of climatic, environmental, traffic and loading conditions. The measurements of rheological properties are also the most accurate method of comparing competitive products, formulation variation, and even effects of additive interactions.

Cement industry The properties of cement are directly dependent on the rate of hydration of the product. This is a function of specific surface area, or more accurately particle size and particle size distribution. Overgrinding - to ensure that the product meets the required specification - is a common problem in this energy-intense industry. It results in unnecessarily high variable costs, waste and compromised throughput. On- and at-line particle size measurement allows cement manufacturers to deliver more consistent products, and improve both transient and steady state control; thereby reducing associated cement milling costs.
