Liposome, micelles and surfactants

Liposomes and micelles are colloidal systems which are used in a wide range of industries including the pharmaceutical and consumer product sectors.

Malvern’s range of easy to use particle size, zeta potential and rheological instrumentation can be used in the study of liposomes, micelles and surfactants across a wide range of industries. These systems and our industry and application knowledge can be used to:

  • Characterize the size and charge of liposomes and micelles
  • Help predict the fate of the liposomes in vivo
  • Monitor the association of charged liposomes with oppositely charged molecules
  • Determine the critical micelle concentration of surfactants
  • Understand the influence of pH and other dispersant conditions on micelle size
  • Study the encapsulation of liquid-liquid systems
  • Determine micelle aggregation number
  • Study the influence of surfactant concentration and dispersant conditions on micelle size.

Characterisation and use of liposomes Size largely determines the sites of action of liposomes. Zeta potential measurement enables the factors affecting size to be investigated.
Size and zeta potential characterisation of anionic and cationic liposomes on the Zetasizer Nano The physical characterization of liposomes is of great importance in understanding their suitability for a range of applications. Knowledge of the zeta potential of a liposome...
Use of zeta potential measurements to study sterically stabilized liposomes Liposomes are vesicles in which an aqueous volume is entirely enclosed by a membrane composed of lipid molecules, usually phospholipid. They can be prepared so that they entrap...
Surfactant micelle characterization using dynamic light scattering. The results reported here illustrate the application of DLS in the study of various aspects of micelle characterization.
Characterisation of mixed micelles Micelle size is an important parameter which correlates with solubilizing efficiency and critical micelle concentration. In this report, the Malvern instruments Zetasizer Nano ZS...
Worm-like Micelles - Microstructure characterisation Worm Like Micelles can be formed from a wide range of different surfactant systems (anionic, cationic and zwitterionic) and also from various block...
