Daimler Chrysler adopts Malvern Spraytec for droplet size measurement in fuel injection research

Malvern Instruments Spraytec system is being used by Daimler Chrysler AG (Stuttgart, Germany) to measure droplet size distribution in fuel sprays. The system operates on a test rig used to study the effects of injector nozzle design on spray development and is part of the company’s continuing work on direct injection (DI) engines. DI engines offer the potential to resolve the apparently conflicting requirements for maximum power output with improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

In DI engines fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, so spray characteristics and mixture formation are critically important. Malvern’s Spraytec system is designed specifically to overcome some of the inherent difficulties associated with measuring droplet size in sprays, such as wetness, high concentration and short duration.

Spraytec is a laser diffraction based system that delivers real time measurement. To be robust enough for continuous operation on an industrial test rig, it is designed to give large clearances between the laser and detector modules. In addition, separation of the control and electronics units allows them to be placed outside the test area.

 Key features determining Daimler Chrysler’s choice of this system were its high measurement speed of up to 2500 times per second, and high time resolution. In addition a 3mm-diameter laser beam allows the researchers to closely examine small portions of the spray plume, to closely characterise spray development.
