Stéphanie Verhaeghe, Quality Control Manager, at Holcim Obourg, Belgium: "The Insitec ALISS has some great features for our application, including abrasion-resistant internals designed specifically to withstand continuous use with materials like cement, and highly polished surfaces that reduce any requirement for cleaning. The instrument has performed well since installation, working 24/7 with negligible attention."
At the Holcim site in Obourg (Belgium) an automated laboratory has been installed for the routine analysis of cement composition and particle size. Within this facility an Insitec at-line particle size analyzer from Malvern Instruments provides detailed particle characterization.
At the centre of the automated laboratory is a robot, which divides incoming samples, transporting them through sample preparation (for XRD and XRF) and analysis. Around the robot are arrayed the instruments with which it interfaces, including the Insitec, which delivers complete particle size distributions 24/7 with no manual input and little routine maintenance. Analytical results are fed directly to the plant control system driving automated process control on the basis of detailed models developed for each cement grade.
